The uraeus was a sign of a raised snake in ancient Egypt (generally a cobra). The uraeus was found in Egyptian art, but it was most famously attached to the very front of pharaohs’ crowns. The snake was a sign of the goddess Wadjet, an ancient Lower Egyptian protective deity.
