Tonatiuh

Symbol of the present, war.

Chalchiuhtlicue and Tlaloc had a son named Tonatiuh. He was picked to be the fifth sun, but he was unable to jump into the flames when the time arrived. Tonatiuh was humiliated when Nanahuatl jumped into the flames. He swiftly followed, and the two of them combined to form two suns. The gods, however, were furious at Tonatiuh and flung a rabbit at him, causing him to lose his luster. He subsequently transformed into the moon and spent the rest of his life chasing Nanahuatl around the sky. In other traditions, he is depicted as a ferocious sun god who waged nightly war against the underworld.
