Upper Egypt’s symbol. This flower, along with the papyrus flower, was used in tombs and temples throughout Egypt to represent the unity of Upper and Lower Egypt. Because the lotus flower shuts and falls underwater at night, and then rises and opens again at dawn, it is a symbol of the sun, of creation, and of rebirth.
