Skull and Bones Symbol

Symbol of death, destruction, victory, power.

The Aztecs were the first to use the skull and bones sign. Tombs were engraved with the skull and bones emblem. On ancient altars in Greece, a skull and crossed scepters were discovered. The skull and bones became a symbol for pirates and looting after the 13th century. The skull and crossbones were first used to symbolize memento mori in Northern Europe, and were depicted on wall hangings and rosaries. In commemoration of Christ’s resurrection, the connotation was then modified to victory over death. The skull and crossbones have been portrayed on the uniforms of many military services, notably the Marine Corps and various divisions of the British Army and Royal Navy, to symbolize authority.
