The owl is regarded as a death sign in Native American culture. Owls are sometimes thought to be evil omens or extraterrestrial emissaries. Owls were regarded messengers of the gods of death in Aztec civilization. It was thought by the Navajo that if an owl spoke a person’s name, that person would die. Blodeuwedd was a flower-made woman whose husband changed her into an owl when she tried to kill him, according to Welsh legend. He changed her into this creature so that the other birds would avoid her and she would never see the afternoon light again. She felt compelled to spend the rest of her life as an owl. Owls were associated with the death of a neighbor in Viking culture.
