The goddess Ostara inspired the name Easter. Ostara was a goddess of fertility. Ancient Germanic cultures revered her and celebrated her with a multi-day feast in April. Christians are thought to have taken her name and modified it to Easter since she was linked with spring. While Easter is connected with rebirth, Ostara was associated with fertility and the dawning of a new day. During the spring festival of Ostara, springs and rivers were thought to be magical.
