Symbol of protection and cleansing.
The Ayizan Veve is a symbol of Ayizan, the marketplace’s Queen. She is a voodoo lwa, or spirit. As one of the most ancient spirits, Ayizan is worshipped with great respect and reverence. She is in charge of voodoo priestesses’ initiation rites. Ayizan is a guardian who wards from evil witchcraft, jealousy, and envy. She helps individuals who have no voice, are victims, or are oppressed. She prepares a space for spiritual purpose by cleansing it. Palm fronds are a sign for her. Women who want her assistance should gather palm fronds and make offerings of yams, bananas, white flowers, and sweet liqueurs. She is linked to St. Ann, the mother of the virgin Mary.
